newborn portraits: patience

October 13, 2009

One of the most important lessons I have taken with me over the years is the importance of waiting for your shot. Patience. This becomes even more important with newborn portraits. We tend to underrate patience in our fast-paced pack-it-all-in society. I think we forget the value of quiet and doing nothing. In photography that translates to building a rapport or a relationship with your subject in a non-verbal way for whatever amount of time it may take. Quietly looking through your camera lens and waiting to push the button until you see exactly what you want to see in a person. Don’t just hit the button because you want the picture now. Patience I believe, is what makes a great photographer.
